Steve Jobs - "Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish" @stanford university

This is one of the best and most inspiring speech ever made. It has every and best experience, a life changing experience which taught Late Steve Jobs most important lessons of his life, he learned how to stand up at the times when he fell and how to start a new begining when he failed. This speech was recorded and then re-written from the original video during 114th  Commencement at Standford University on June 12, 2005. Though it's a little longer but I recommend you all to read it full and I'm sure that everyone of us will get something to learn from this eminent speech. 

Here it goes like this, "I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it. No big deal. Just three stories.


The first story is about connecting the dots...


I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out?


It started before I was born. My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife. Except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl. So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: "We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?" They said: "Of course." My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college.


And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents' savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn't see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn't interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.


It wasn't all romantic. I didn't have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends' rooms, I returned coke bottles for the 5¢ deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it. And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on. Let me give you one example:


Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed. Because I had dropped out and didn't have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can't capture, and I found it fascinating.


None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, it's likely that no personal computer would have them. If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do. Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.


Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something - your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.


My second story is about love and loss...


I was lucky - I found what I loved to do early in life. Woz and I started Apple in my parents' garage when I was 20. We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage into a $2 billion company with over 4000 employees. We had just released our finest creation - the Macintosh - a year earlier, and I had just turned 30. And then I got fired. How can you get fired from a company you started? Well, as Apple grew we hired someone who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so things went well. But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out. When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him. So at 30 I was out. And very publicly out. What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating.


I really didn't know what to do for a few months. I felt that I had let the previous generation of entrepreneurs down - that I had dropped the baton as it was being passed to me. I met with David Packard and Bob Noyce and tried to apologize for screwing up so badly. I was a very public failure, and I even thought about running away from the valley. But something slowly began to dawn on me - I still loved what I did. The turn of events at Apple had not changed that one bit. I had been rejected, but I was still in love. And so I decided to start over.


I didn't see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.


During the next five years, I started a company named NeXT, another company named Pixar, and fell in love with an amazing woman who would become my wife. Pixar went on to create the world's first computer animated feature film, Toy Story, and is now the most successful animation studio in the world. In a remarkable turn of events, Apple bought NeXT, I returned to Apple, and the technology we developed at NeXT is at the heart of Apple's current renaissance. And Laurene and I have a wonderful family together.


I'm pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn't been fired from Apple. It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it. Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You've got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don't settle.


My third story is about death...


When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: "If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you'll most certainly be right." It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.


Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool I've ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything - all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure - these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.


About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning, and it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas. I didn't even know what a pancreas was. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor's code for prepare to die. It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought you'd have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months. It means to make sure everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as possible for your family. It means to say your goodbyes.


I lived with that diagnosis all day. Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they stuck an endoscope down my throat, through my stomach and into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas and got a few cells from the tumor. I was sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery. I had the surgery and I'm fine now.


This was the closest I've been to facing death, and I hope it's the closest I get for a few more decades. Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept:


No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life's change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.


Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.


When I was young, there was an amazing publication called The Whole Earth Catalog, which was one of the bibles of my generation. It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he brought it to life with his poetic touch. This was in the late 1960's, before personal computers and desktop publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, scissors, and polaroid cameras. It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along: it was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notions.


Stewart and his team put out several issues of The Whole Earth Catalog, and then when it had run its course, they put out a final issue. It was the mid-1970s, and I was your age. On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous. Beneath it were the words: "Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish." It was their farewell message as they signed off. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. And I have always wished that for myself. And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you.

A Tribute To Steven Paul Jobs

On October 5th at 6:30AM, Friend of mine sents a message stating the shocking news of the death of one of the greatest innovators of all time. At just the age of 56, Steve Jobs had almost 1/3rd of the world knowing him making him one of the most renowned personalities in recent times. There were rumors in the past of him passing away and I regreted this news as well. Turned on the TV to find out if the news was true. A legend in his own way, Innovation and Easy going in life was his key USP’s.

From “Steve Jobs is an American Entrepreneur…” to “Steve Jobs was an American Entrepreneur…” in Wikipedia was the next thing I checked out to find out if the news was true. Giving away his CEO post to Tim Cook in August I guess he already knew that his time was coming to an end. Exactly a day before his death the latest iPhone which is the iPhone 4S was launched {Probably the S stands for Steve – iPhone 4 Steve} . I have always had these 2 videos of Steve, one the very famous Stanford Graduation Ceremony speech in 2005 and the All things Digital Conference one on one talk with Bill Gates which was very hilarious at the same time very informative.

Steve had his own share of Bad Phase in his life and this was during 1984 when there was an Industry wide sales slump and following an internal power struggle and an announcement of significant layoffs because of the disappointing sales at that time, Jobs was relieved of his duties and he himself claimed that he got fired from Apple. After a while Jobs started all over again and came back to Apple Inc. He realized he’s been living in one of the most creative period of his life and that Innovation was the key if he wanted the company to grow. From iMacs to iPads he had a big hand in its development.

Not many know that Steve Jobs as CEO was earning just $1 as his salary, Others were all shares and in 2010 Forbes estimated his net wealth at $8.3 Billion. Jobs always stressed on the importance of team work and his model for business believe it or not were ‘The Beatles” as they kept each others negative tendencies in check; and they balanced each other. The totel of the band was greater than the sum of the parts. His importance in todays world can be witnessed by the kinds of Tribute he’s been receiving from all walks of life from Obama to Bill Gates.

Apple Inc Paid Tribute their all time Hero Steve Jobs by having his Photo in the home page of http://www.apple.com/. And said “Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.”

Steve’s all time Rival and a great friend Bill Gates tweeted, “I’m truly saddened to learn of Steve Job’s death. The world rarely sees someone who had the profound impact Steve has had, the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come, For those of us lucky enough to get to work with him, it’s been an insanely great honor. I will miss Steve immensely”

Google’s CEO Larry Page said, : He was a great man with incredible achievements and amazing brilliance. Google also posted a subtle tribute below its main search bar which said “Steve Jobs, 1955-2011”

President of the US where Apple Inc was born, Barack Obama said: "There may be no greater tribute to Steve’s success than fact that much of world learned of his passing on a device he invented."

SPY SATELLITES

There might be a SPY SATELLITE which is continuously observing us. Don’t you believe?? Keep reading you will come to know the fact yourself…

In the 1950s and the 1960s, the USA and the USSR were engaged in a political conflict which became popular as Cold War. It was a time of possible nuclear attack. In 1963 the Americans launched a series of satellites called Vela Hotel or Watchman. They carried instruments which were designed to watch for large explosions and especially tests for nuclear weapons. At the same time, the Russians began building their long running Cosmos series of satellites to listen into radio messages around the world.

Secret Satellites

Since then, many countries have launched hundreds of satellites to spy on other nations and keep checks on troops, tanks, missile bases, air force planes and navy ships. These satellites were kept secret. The experts who design and operate them don’t want ordinary people and especially other countries, to know what their satellites can see and do. Some countries deny that the satellite exists, as call them observation satellites. The photographs of Russian Cosmos satellites were released many years after the satellites had fallen out of use.

Military Satellites

Most spy satellites are in elliptical or low earth orbit where they can see or hear more. The elliptical orbit varies more than 40,000 to less than 200 km high above earth surface. Some spy satellites have amazingly powerful telescopes that take detailed photographs. These reveal a number of troops on a March, the markings of a trucks or planes, and even missiles. Navigation satellites and GPS (Global Positioning System) are also used for military purpose to make sure they attack the correct way.

Individual tanks can be seen by the spy satellites far above, which beam the pictures to secret ground station on Earth.

Code Breakers

Some communication satellites are just for military use. They relay secret coded messages between planes, ships, submarines, ground bases and command centre. Other countries also used satellites called Ferrets to listen into these signals hoping to break the codes.

Stealing Satellite Secrets

Comates pass on enormous amount of secret information, such as government defense plans or new inventions. This can be sent in coded form by a narrow downlink beam to one small receiving dish, so that other people cannot listen in. But criminals could use high flying plane or a reflector dish on a tall most to intercept the code and sell the secret information for huge amount of money.

War by satellites

In 1983, the USA announced its SDI (Strategic Defense Initiative). It was nicknamed Star Wars. The Plan was to launch the satellites with weapons such as ray-guns, which could destroy other satellites or missiles. But the costs were enormous and technical problems were too great. In 1992, SDI was changed ground-based radar and missiles instead. Even so, one day satellites might still be used as weapons, to destroy each other or targets lying on Earth.

Satellite Kidnappings

There are several ways that criminals or terrorists might kidnap a satellite. They could jam the control signals so that the satellites drift into space and become useless. They might send secret control signals to the satellite’s computers systems which would run the batteries down so low that satellite no longer works, Or another space craft could be capture the orbiting satellite, even knocking it out of it’s orbit.

The limitations of the spy satellites are boundless and couldn’t be imagined. If it is so, is our privacy safe anymore? Shouldn’t there be limitations for these spy technology?

Technology has great impact on our society and hence in medical science. It has been continued since human lived in caves and used stones as tools. Today we can notice many advancement and growth in medical science; people are living longer, developing new ways of doing things, curing fatal diseases that once thought to be an impossible thing. Technology has increased the life expectancy of people and with technological advancement in medical treatment and surgery, average life expectancy of people is also increasing.

If we talk about the advancement of technology in medical science today robotic surgeries are very popular,where extreme precision and delicacy is necessary. Cloning is also another example of advancement in technology, by which an exact genetic copy of another organism can be created; this is something where two organisms have same DNA molecules. Technology has become an important part of medical science today and it will surely help medical science to improve and grow in future.
Medical technology encompasses a wide range of products which are used to diagnose, monitor or treat the disease. It broadly includes medical devices, pacemakers, orthopedic shoes, spectacles and contact lens, insulin pen, hip prostheses, surgical instruments, bandages, syringes, and more than 5,00,000 other products are available today.

 With the advancement in the medical technology, came new medical procedures which have changed human lifestyles. Such medical techniques include plastic surgery, prenatal screening and human cloning. These have diminished the tolerance of natural human characteristics. Major challenges will occur in medical science in future, research and improvement in the medical technology will help to overcome this. Medical technology has both bright side and dark side, it depends on us how we utilize it. Right utilization of it will definitely lead us to a better life and a bright future.

Which is the Best Selling Computer Of All the Time?

Which brand is currently the hottest in the market? How much revenue did Apple earned in 2011? Which tablet is making news in the market? Well, all of you must know all the answers of my above questions but do you know, Which is the best selling computer of all time?

No it’s not from the Apple, neither HP nor Dell, but it’s from Commodore International, a computer manufacturing company which unfortunately have to be made dysfunctional in 1994, due to huge loss and bankruptcy. But Commodore C64 which was released in early 1992 by Commodore International was a hit and made a huge success during 1983–1986. It was very popular home-computer of that time and is known to be the best selling computer of all the time. With sales totaled between 12.5 and 17 million units, it dominated the market for 11 years with share between 30% - 40% and trading of its 2 million units per year, outselling some of the best manufacturers of that time such as IBM PC clones, Apple Inc., and Atari 8-bit family computers.

The Commodore 64 used an 8-bit (MOS Technology 6510 microprocessor) with some other features such as 64 Kb RAM, 2 built-in drives, VIC –II(video graphic chip), SID (sound chip), making it the best home-computers, if compared to other computers available during that period. Commodore played a vital role in the development of the home–personal computer industry in the 1970s and 1980s. Around 10,000 approx. commercial software titles including development tools, office productivity applications, and games were made during its lifetime.

Communication in India has become a primary necessity and thereby the companies have tasted tremendous success. Several researches have been made in last few years and the research is still going, if we look back at the beginning of these researches was started during the world war when the birds found not only died but were in a roasted, ready-to-eat condition, due to the harmful radiation yielded by the antenna towers of the warships. This stopped when the radar power was made off. Also, scientists found that birds failing to navigate their direction when they approached the antenna and started flying in zig-zag directions, thereafter the research on harmful effects of Electromagnetic Radiations was started.

If we believe the scientists researching on harmful effects of radiation, there exist an electromagnetic wave pollution called as electro-smog. These radiations are capable of increasing brain tumors and can cause severe cancers too.

We in India do not follow many of the guidelines that should be followed like in US there should be no residential building within 50m radius of the cellphone tower, but here in India we let the Telecom companies to place their towers over the top of our buildings because of lack of awareness of its harmful effects and also because of huge amount paid by the companies.

So far government hasn’t made any strong and adequate law for these Telecom companies, therefore, all we can do is take precautions. Here we have listed some of the precautions that we can follow:

Ø     Avoid unwanted calls, if not then minimise the time you speak, preferably use the mobile phone only for a very short duration.

Ø     Avoid calling when the signal is weak, because then the mobile radiates maximally, in such condition we can…

• Use our headsets, if incase not available then,

• Use cellphone’s loudspeaker.

Ø     More precaution should be taken care of in case of growing children since they are still growing and mobile radiations are more damaging for them.

Ø     Avoid putting the cellphone in left pocket, since it is closer to heart.

Ø     Avoid carrying cellphone clipped to your belt, as it has been found to affect fertility.

Ø     Switch between the left and right side of your head while using the cellphone without headsets.

Ø     Keep the cellphone away from pillow while sleeping.

Ø     Use your landline, particularly when you work demands a lot of communication.

Tips On Time Management!!

Time Management

Time management,  is the art of getting things done faster, effectively and efficiently, thereby getting more precious time for yourself.

The place to start is with the list, check the ones on which you should concentrate to improve management of your time.

ü      Think of procrastination as your worst enemy.

ü      Develop daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly lists of goals.

ü      Draw up a plan each day of what you want to accomplish.

ü      Set priorities and learn to weigh yours against those of your boss/ colleagues/family.

ü      Don’t passively accept a deadline you can’t meet.

ü      Schedule hours for quiet work and other times when you will be available to other people.

Three things to be kept on mind:

1. Plan: Your hour should be measured by the day, by the week or by the month and audited at the end of the period. Understand where you could have saved time and take action to remedy the situation immediately.
2. Prioritize: Your activities or events keeping in mind the priorities.
3. Protect: Your time by doing things right the first time, so that more energy is not wasted on re-doing it, not sleeping well, and allowing personal matters and other things to interfere with work. 

         Also remember that of all the time saving techniques, the most effective is the use of the word ‘NO’.

         You cannot protect your priorities unless you learn to say ‘NO’ diplomatically, tactfully but firmly.

How to save Facebook videos to your computer??

Hey guys as today we all are very fond of facebook, for most of us it has became a daily routine to update status, to check notification, etc. etc…while doing so many times we come across some interesting videos shared by our friends, which we can’t download directly. So here is a trick to download the video directly to our system without using any video downloading software.

Since we all know, everything we do in our web is cached in cache folder on our computer, so, let's use this never used cached today to save our video file by going through few simple steps that i have mentioned below.

To do this we first need to play the video to it’s full length, which is something like saving the video on our computer’s temporary folder called cache.

There are several browsers and tricks to apply this trick as well but I felt it’s easy to use internet explorer to do this trick.

So now all we need to do is to find Temporary Files/Cache in Internet Explorer

1. So first of all open Internet Explorer browser on your system. Then, go to the video and watch it full.

2. Now go to the Tools tab in menubar of internet explorer, then,

Internet Options > Browsing history Settings > View Files.

3. You will see a large sized video file with long name and unknown type, if you move your mouse cursor over it, it will show you the link something like this: (http://video.ak.fbcdn.net/cfs-ak-snc4/84057/84.../...........mp44F11B300&__gda__=13.....34)

4. Just copy and paste that file at your desktop, and then you are done.

Try to play the video and if the file format doesn't support the media player you have, then use video converters to convert the video to a supported video format.

Bluetooth Technology

“BLUETOOTH TECHNOLOGY”

Bluetooth is a low-power, low cost and short-range wireless technology. It was originally developed by Ericsson for short-range communication between personal devices e.g. a cell phone and a computer or other devices. The distance of data transmission is small in comparison to other modes of wireless communication (mostly 5-10 mtrs.).

Working:

• A Bluetooth device is comprised of an adapter.
• Link Management Protocol (LMP) is responsible for peer– to –peer message exchange when the electronic devices interfere in each other’s radio range.
• The Bluetooth device enabled by the Service delivery protocol joins the piconet and enquires with all the services available. The concept of Master and Slave is used in the Bluetooth technology. Only after the master takes the initial action, the devices can begin to talk. Bluetooth Global-lD is exchanged among the electronic devices and a connection is build up after the profiles are matched.

• Less power consumption.

• Robustness.
• Easy Automatic Synchronization.
• The newer versions of Bluetooth offer better and increased security.

Applications:

·         Removal of traditional wires in test equipments, bar code scanners, traffic control devices, GPS receivers and medical equipment is a revolutionary change.

·         Bluetooth enabled advertising hoardings can receive and display the smaller advertisements by using this technology.

·         PDA, PC or laptop which has enabled Bluetooth can communicate with each other and update with its latest information. This technology has helped in synchronizing the data easily.

Problems:

Just like any other technology, Bluetooth does have certain issues, such as:

• Unsuccessful Pairing.
• Short Area Coverage (mostly 5–10 mtrs.).
